World War Z
World War Z is an apocalyptic blockbuster film that stars A-List celebrity Brad Pitt. I will analyse the trailer, poster and the magazine front cover of the film to gain knowledge of the general forms and conventions of existing films, so that in the long run I would be able to conform and subvert to these formalities and input them on to my own.
Trailer Analysis
The beginning starts off with an equilibrium, where a normal ideal American family are settled in a homely environment. There is a high key lighting which suggests a happy atmosphere. There are no music in the background that complements the calm surroundings. Although within the television shot, displays a montage of apocalyptic scenery and the daughter of the protagonist asking her father "What's martial law?", the equilibrium becomes unbalanced as a fighter jet hovers over the city.
Scenes of panic and destruction has built up among the city, shown through the explosions and the city crowded with running paranoid people, where the pace of the editing has sped up. We then see the family again, but now in dismay after the catastrophic events, forced to flee their home as they escape through the rooftop on a helicopter. We see Pitt taking action barricading the doors as his family safely gets in the helicopter. Guns are being fired by the armed forces, as we assume that the zombies are trying to attack the fleeing helicopter with the family of the protagonist. We see more establishing shots of the scenery, of the deteriorating city. A shot of Brad Pitt hugging his daughter, we get a sense of relief that his family is safe leaving behind the city they used to live in. More establishing shots of cities affected by the apocalypse were featured, showing that the catastrophe has reached a global scale. They land in a naval ship where the protagonist is ordered to join forces with the armed forces, in which he is hesitant about leaving his family behind. Deciding to uphold the commander's wishes, he becomes part of the armed forces that fight against the zombies. He travels around the world where you get a glimpse of the mass destruction through the high angled aerial establishing shots of the different cities around the world.
